The seed syllables (bījas) “Om Ah Hum” or “oṃ āḥ hūṃ” are traditionally associated with Body (Hum), Speech (Ah) and Mind (Om) in Buddhism. |
They may also be considered as the primal vibrations — “Om/oṃ” as primal source vibration, “Ah/āḥ” as primal speech vibration (or the female aspect) and “Hum/hūṃ” as the mind vibration. |
According to Lama Govinda, “Om” presents Buddhahood in potential, and is contrasted with “Hum” which represents Buddhahood made manifest. |

The synthetic meanings given by Kūkai (空海大师) is: “ha” summarizes all religious teachings; “a” is absolute reality; “ū” includes all religious practices; while “ṃ” encompasses all religious attainments. So, “hūṃ”symbolizes the Dharmakāya (法身); it is neither being nor non-being, nor both, nor neither, being beyond such dualities; “a” is the negative prefix in Sanskrit which forms a negative to any word when added to the beginning; this is the truth that all Buddhists teachings are pointing to so “a” summarises them all. |

In his “Ungi gi”, Kukai makes "hūṃ" as a cipher for understanding the Truth. The various aspects take in all Truths, all teachings, all practices, and all attainments. It summarizes the two basic false views of nihilism and eternalism, and shows them to be false. The Truth of things is that they are neither real nor unreal, these categories do not apply – this is a restatement of the Buddha’s fundamental insight into the nature of phenomena, couched in the language of the Madhyamika (中观派). |

Also, the bīja "hūṃ" embodies all the principles in all the sutras: “the Enlightened mind of Mahāvairocana is the cause, great compassion is the root, and skillful means are the ultimate … The content of the word are broad, yet no confusion can be found; the form of the word is simple, yet nothing is missing. The word is, indeed, created by the suprarational power and the natural grace of the Tathāgata Mahāvairocana.” |

In Kūkai's analysis, “hūṃ” is a hermeneutical device which can unlock the true nature of reality. It is massively polyvalent, which is to say that it has almost infinite meaning because of the network of associations that it sits at the center of. |

This is a Tibetan Buddhist Chant, used for healing, balance, blessing, connecting mind and heart. The "Om Ah Hum", the Mantra of Blessing, frequently precedes the recitation of other mantras. The sounds Om, Ah, and Hum are individual Sanskrit seed syllables. It implies a trinity and union of 3 things. In Buddhism the trinity is that of body (kaya), sound or speech (vak), and Spirit or Mind (citta). The perfect state of being of each of these three bodies is symbolized by the three words of Om Ah Hum. The Body is not only the physical body of man but also the entire material dimension of the individual. The Sound is the life energy of the body, known as prana. This mantra with hand movements helps connect our heart and mind with spirit. |

Lama Thubten Yeshe (益西加措仁波切) teaches the purification mantra this way: |

We visualize these glowing syllables radiating from the crown (Om), Throat (Ah), and Heart (Hum) in white, red and blue. |
Purification of Body —“Concentrate on the white OM in your brain. Recognize that this white OM is the pure energy of the divine body of the buddhas and bodhisattvas.” |
Purification of Speech — “Concentrate on the red AH at your throat chakra, like the sun at sunset. Recognize that this red AH is the pure speech of the buddhas and bodhisattvas.” |
Purification of Mind — “Your heart is pure, cool and calm, opened by the radiant light of the moon and the HUM. Infinite blue light radiates from the HUM. All narrow (狭隘的) thoughts disappear; all indecisive (优柔寡断的) minds disappear; all obsessed (痴迷的) minds disappear.” |
You can begin working with the “seed syllable (bīja)” purification mantra “Om Ah Hum”. It often precedes or concludes other mantras in a practice session. |
