[[Comment_en]]
Shakyamuni, the historical Buddha, cast as the overall teacher of the tradition, illustrates the point that without a good teacher in the beginning there can be no success in spiritual training. Reciting this mantra therefore helps us find a good teacher to lead us towards clarity of mind and ultimately discovery of our own pure consciousness, which is the real guru.
Shakyamuni is a name for the nirmana-kaya (涅槃相) aspect of the Buddha, and is therefore considered by Buddhists to be synonymous with the historical Buddha. In early texts the Buddha is most often referred to as Bhagavata or "the Blessed One", or as Gautama (Pāli Gotama, 乔达摩) his clan-氏族;宗族 name. He refers to himself as Tathagata-如来 or Sugata-善逝. We refer to him as "the Buddha". Buddha is the past-participle (过去分词) of the verb budh ('to awaken') and thus means 'awakened'.
It is said that the historical Buddha grew up in a life of luxury but after seeing that everyone would grow old, become ill, and die, he abandoned his home and joined a group of ascetics seeking the way beyond death. Subsequently he abandoned severe asceticism as well and pursued a middle way between hedonism-享乐主义 and asecticism-禁欲主义 that enabled him to make a decisive breakthrough known as bodhi, awakening, usually translated as enlightenment. He spent the rest of his life teaching others how they could also awaken.
The Buddha was not a God, but a human being who attained an extraordinary insight into the nature of existence: an insight that rid his mind of delusion, hatred, and craving, and which allowed him to attain true happiness, free from suffering.
The Buddha is also known as the Tathagatha (The One-thus-come or The One-thus-gone, 如来), as well as the Sugata (Well-Gone One, 善逝), Bhagavan (Blessed One, 博伽梵), and the Jina (Conqueror, 大智者).
[[Comment_cn]]
