(1) Buddha of Purification within me, embodying all the Buddhas, please protect my resolve to purify all my karmas and always bestow on me the ability to make my mind good, virtuous, auspicious and immeasurably loving with the indestructible strength of a diamond. Even though our potential remains obscure in the darkness of negativity, it need not be permanent. This mantra helps transform negative karma created over many lifetimes. |
(2) Om Vajrasattva! Preserve the bond (samaya) ! As Vajrasattva stand before me. Reveal yourself as the vajra-being! Be steadfast for me! Be greatly pleased for me! Be fully nourishing for me! Love me passionately! Grant me all success and attainment! And in all actions make my mind most excellent. Hum! Ha ha ha ha ho! Blessed One! Vajra of all the Tathagatas! Do not abandon me. * “Om Vajrasattva, samayam anupalaya.” — “Om Vajrasattva! Preserve the bond (samaya) !” We are acknowledging our alienation from our true nature by calling upon Vajrasattva to preserve the bond (samaya), whereby we do the Vajrasattva invocation regularly and Vajrasattva for his part responds by bestowing upon us the fruits of the practice. This “bond (samaya),” represents a mutual commitment on the part of the practitioner and Vajrasattva. In psycho-spiritual terms, if you strive to realize your own innate purity, your innate purity will strive to manifest itself from the depths of the unconscious. |
* “Vajrasattva, tweno-patishtha.” — “As Vajrasattva stand before me.” We then call upon Vajrasattva as a spiritual friend (kalyanamitra), to manifest in our meditation and in our lives. |
* “Dridho me bhava.” — “Be steadfast for me !” We entreat Vajrasattva to be with us constantly. We are endeavoring to constantly come back to recognizing the mind’s true nature. |
* “Sutoshyo me bhava, Suposhyo me bhava, Anurakto me bhava.” — “Be greatly pleased for me ! Be fully nourishing for me ! Love me passionately !” Vajrasattva becomes more like an intimate friend or even a lover, and is no longer just a protector. He’s someone who knows us deeply and cares passionately for us. He is our own deepest nature, so at this stage in the mantra we’re experiencing a reunion with ourselves. |
* “Sarva siddhim me prayaccha, Sarva-karma-su ca me chittam, shreyah kuru. Hum !” — “Grant me all success and attainment ! And in all actions make my mind most excellent.” We now embody the qualities of Vajrasattva himself, and so to some extent we have become him, with qualities such as “perfection”, “accomplishment”, “attainment” or “success”, and it refers to spiritual power attained through practice. |
* “Ha ha ha ha hoh !” — “Ha ha ha ha hoh !” This is the joyful sound of liberation. These five syllables are also said to represent the five Buddha families, which are all emanations of Vajrasattva. “Hoh” means wisdom. |
* “Bhagawan ! Sarva-tathagata-vajra ma me muñca.” — “Blessed One ! Vajra of all the Tathāgatas! Do not abandon me.” Having experienced the innate purity of the mind, we aspire always to stay in touch with it. The “Tathāgatas” are the Buddhas, and the “Vajra of all the Tathāgatas” is the innately pure nature of the Awakened mind. |
* “Vajri-bhava maha-samaya-sattva.” — “Be the Vajra-bearer, Being of the Great Bond (samaya) !” This suggests that we are imploring Vajrasattva to be means for and path to Enlightenment for all beings. He is the vajra-bearer (the representation of Awakening for all sentient beings). |

Vajrasattva's name in Tibetan is Dorge Sempa. It means "diamond being". He represents the innate purity of the mind. The chant is a thought form producing mental clarity. • 缘起,以及什么是“金刚”? |
我整理瑜伽梵语咒语,本来并不想过多涉及佛教密教的内容,但是在查阅资料的时候,发现佛教思想与印度宗教传统的关系实在太密切了,尤其是藏传佛教。我原本对藏传佛教也是一知半解,甚至不知道还有个叫“金刚乘”的流派,更不要说这个“金刚萨埵”以及“金刚手菩萨”了。藏传佛教里动不动这个“金刚”,那个“金刚”,“金刚”到底是个啥东东?是大猩猩,还是 “Transformer”? |
我记得汉地佛教不怎么念咒语,禅宗的冥想也只限于静坐,和尚要念也多数是唱经。我熟知的咒语只限于净土宗的那两句:“南无阿弥陀佛”、“南无观世音菩萨”,就连最殊胜的观世音菩萨“六字大明咒”,在汉地似乎也没多少人念。而藏传佛教就不一样了,咒语千奇百怪,让人理不出头绪。这次在查阅瑜伽唱诵的资料的时候,居然找到了很多藏传佛教咒语的梵语出处,让我从源头上理解了这些咒语的涵义和功用。相比于从藏语咒语入手,从梵语原始文本入手事半功倍。难怪国学和佛学大师季羡林先生,研究佛教的同时还研究梵文,只有这样才能透彻地理解佛教的思想。 |
我所查阅的几个英文网站,非常专业、严谨,把每个咒语的来龙去脉讲得很明白,同时列出了梵语、藏语及 ISAT 拼音版本,还指出了梵语和藏语发音的差异。更重要的是,咒语中的每个词的涵义都解释得清清楚楚(我以前一直以为咒语里的词是没意义的)。但是,还应该明白的是,就像歌手 “Deva Premal” 所说的,梵语咒语更注重的是发音,词的涵义反倒是次要的。所以我一直强调,既然这些咒语本来是梵语的,那么在有条件的情况下,应该尽量用接近梵语的音来念诵,这样从理论上来说,效果会更好一些。虽然藏语咒语已经尽最大努力去接近梵音,但毕竟两大语系发音差异太大(梵语属于印欧语系,藏语属于汉藏语系,这是两个发音方式完全不同的语系)。 |
就拿我一直搞不懂的“金刚”一词来说,藏语发音“班扎”,梵语发音 “vajra”(“瓦吉拉”,或“瓦嘉”),差异非常明显;翻译成“金刚”,涵义也过于偏狭。梵语 “vajra” 有两层含义,一方面是“霹雳、闪电”,另一方面才是“金刚、钻石”。前者代表自然界最强大的力量和武器(在古人看来),古印度吠陀神话的早期的最高神、雷电之神“因陀罗” (Indra),古希腊神话的最高神“宙斯” (Zeus),北欧神话的最高神、雷神“奥丁” (Autin),他们的武器都是“霹雳、闪电”,可以用它劈死一切妖魔鬼怪,所以佛教里就借用此义来表示可以斩断一切无明和妄念。当然,“金刚”代表坚固、坚不可摧,也就用来表示觉悟、信仰或信念的坚定、坚强。显然,“vajra” 的两种含义都不能偏废。但是,我看到“金刚”两个字,是打死也想不到“霹雳、闪电”的含义的。而佛教中“金刚萨埵” (Vajrasattva) 以及“金刚手菩萨” (Vajrapani) 的造像,手里拿的都是“霹雳”,而不是“金刚”。如果不是这次看到了梵文的原始含义,我还是无法透彻地理解什么是“金刚”。 |
此外,不得不感叹“金刚”这个词在金刚乘佛教中的语意多变性:上面已经说过,在斩断无明、妄念方面,它可以像“闪电、霹雳” (Vajra);在自我保护方面,它可以坚不可摧如“金刚石” (Vajra)。而在佛教密教修行的教法中,所谓的“金刚”,实际上指的就是各大“密续” (Tantra),也即各种秘密传授的“教统”,或者修行体系和方法,比如:胜乐金刚、时轮金刚、密集金刚、大威德金刚等等。在这些“密续”修行体系中,都有一位“中心神”,或者“本尊” (Yidam),这些“神”或者“本尊”,也被称为是“金刚”(Vajra, Bendza 或 Dorje)——确切地说,应该说是“一对神”,因为在“无上瑜珈”的修法中,每位“本尊”其实都是“男尊和女尊”相结合的形式(Yab-Yum, or father-mother)。 |
另外,在金刚乘佛教中,最常用的术语“身密、语密、意密”,往往令外人一头雾水。它们有时又被称为 “金刚之身、语、意”(body-, speech-, mind-vajra),其含义就是“纯净的身、语、意”,但这种“纯净”是不能被污染的,故也被称为“金刚”。“金刚萨埵”名字中的“金刚”,就是“不能被污染的、绝对的纯净、纯洁”之意。 |
** 综上,简单总结一下“金刚”这个词在佛教中的四层含义: (1)代表“闪电 + 金刚”,威力强大且坚不可摧,可摧毁一切无明、妄念,且不能为外物所坏; (2)代表“不能被污染的、绝对的纯洁、纯净”,比如“金刚萨埵”,以及上面说的“身语意”三密; (3)代表“一个密续的一整套教法和修行方法” (Tantra); (4)代表“一个密续修行体系中的‘本尊’,或着‘中心神’” (Yidam)。 |

འོད་ཟེར་སྤྲོ་བསྡུས་དོན་གཉིས་བྱས༔ |
özer trodü dön nyi jé From which light rays radiate, then return, performing two kinds of benefit, |
ཉམས་ཆགས་རྟོག་སྒྲིབ་དབྱིངས་སུ་སྦྱང་༔ |
nyamchak tok drib ying su jang And pacifying transgressions and obscurations of awareness into space. |
སྣོད་བཅུད་ཞི་ཁྲོ་རབ་འབྱམས་ཀྱི༔ |
nöchü zhitro rabjam kyi The entire outer and inner world arises as deity, mantra and wisdom |
ལྷ་སྔགས་ཡེ་ཤེས་རོལ་པར་ཤར༔ |
lha ngak yeshe rolpar shar Of the countless peaceful and wrathful deities. |
3. Mantra Recitation |
ཨོཾ་བཛྲ་སཏྭ་ཨ༔ |
om bendza sato ah oṃ vajrasatva āḥ |
ཞེས་རྡོར་སེམས་དང་། |
Recite the mantra of Vajrasattva. After that: |
ཨོཾ་བོ་དྷི་ཙིཏྟ་མ་ཧཱ་སུ་ཁ་ཛྙཱ་ན་དྷཱ་ཏུ་ཨ༔ |
om bodhitsitta maha sukha jnana dhatu ah oṃ bodhicitta mahāsukha jñānadhātu āḥ |
ཞེས་ཞི་བ་དང་། |
The general mantra of peaceful deities, and then: |
ཨོཾ་རུ་ལུ་རུ་ལུ་ཧཱུྃ་བྷྱོ་ཧཱུྃ༔ |
om rulu rulu hum jo hum oṃ rulu rulu hūṃ bhyo hūṃ |
ཁྲོ་བོའི་སྤྱི་སྔགས་བཅས་བཟླ། ཐུན་མཐར། |
The general mantra of wrathful deities. To conclude: |
ཧཱུྃ་ཧཱུྃ་ཧཱུྃ་གིས་འོད་གསལ་དུ་བསྡུ། |
With 'Hūṃ ! Hūṃ ! Hūṃ !', everything dissolves into clear light. |
ཕཊ་ཕཊ་ཕཊ་ཀྱིས་ཐུན་མཚམས་ཀྱི་ལྷར་ལྡང་ལ། |
With 'Phaṭ ! Phaṭ ! Phaṭ !', you re-emerge as the deity between sessions. |
4. Dedication |
དགེ་བ་འདི་ཡིས་མྱུར་དུ་བདག ། |
gewa di yi nyurdu dak Through this merit, may I swiftly accomplish |
རྡོ་རྗེ་སེམས་དཔའ་འགྲུབ་གྱུར་ནས། ། |
dorjé sempa drub gyur né The state of Vajrasattva, |
འགྲོ་བ་གཅིག་ཀྱང་མ་ལུས་པ། ། |
drowa chik kyang malüpa And may I establish every sentient being without exception |
དེ་ཡི་ས་ལ་འགོད་པར་ཤོག ། |
dé yi sa la göpar shok In that perfect state as well. |
ཅེས་བསྔོ་སྨོན་གྱིས་རྒྱས་གདབ་པར་བྱའོ། ། |
Seal with the dedication and prayers of aspiration. |
ཐུགས་སྒྲུབ་ཞལ་གདམས་སྙིང་བྱང་ལྟར་མངྒ་ལས་ཁོལ་དུ་ཕྱུངས་པའོ། །དགེའོ།། །། |
